Target Audience:
Independent nongovernmental organizations working to advance democracy, human rights, free media, accountability, transparency, civil society, democratic political processes, and related goals in eligible countries outside the U.S. and established democracies.
Opportunity Summary:
NED funds nongovernmental organizations only. It does not fund individuals, government bodies, or state-supported institutions. It supports nonpartisan programs that promote democracy, freedom of information, independent media, human rights, accountability, civil society, civic education, democratic conflict resolution, and related priorities.
What It Supports:
- Human rights and rule of law.
- Freedom of information and independent media.
- Accountability and transparency.
- Strengthening civil society and civic education.
- Democratic conflict resolution.
- Freedom of association and a broad-based market economy.
Eligibility:
- Only nongovernmental organizations are eligible.
- Individuals, government bodies, and state-supported institutions are not eligible.
- Organizations based outside the target country may apply if the project is implemented in an eligible country.
- Projects implemented in the U.S. or established democracies are not funded.
Important note:
If your project is in Lebanon or elsewhere in the Middle East and North Africa, it should be submitted through the MENA regional address and must be non-governmental, non-individual, and aligned with NED’s democratic priorities.
