Deadline: Monday 20 July 2026, 23:59 BST – multi-year Expressions of Interest. - Target Audience: Legally registered organisations (public or non-profit private) from anywhere in the world, working in partnership with locally registered organisations in target countries, and implementing projects that protect cultural heritage at risk from conflict and/or climate change. Participating Countries: Bangladesh, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iraq, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Libya, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Yemen. Fund Focus / Purpose: The Cultural Protection Fund (CPF), led by the British Council in partnership with DCMS, supports projects that safeguard cultural heritage at risk due to conflict and climate change, while contributing to sustainable social stability and economic prosperity, with a strong emphasis on living and tangible heritage. What Counts as Cultural Heritage in this Call:
  • Archaeological sites and monuments.
  • Museum, library and archive collections of objects, books and records.
  • Historic buildings and cultural spaces.
  • Cultural traditions: stories, festivals, crafts, music, dance, costumes, and their link to places.
  • Other expressions of living heritage connected to specific sites, places or landscapes.
  • Histories of people, communities, places and events.
  • Languages and dialect heritage.
  • Memories and experiences (often captured as oral history).
Opportunity Summary: Established in 2016, the Cultural Protection Fund provides multi-year grants for projects protecting cultural heritage at risk in selected countries. This 2026 round invites Expressions of Interest for grants up to £500,000, supporting initiatives that strengthen heritage protection, community resilience, and local economic benefits through inclusive, partnership-based projects. Grant Size and What the Fund Offers:
  • Grants up to £500,000 per multi-year project (projects ending by 31 January 2029).
  • Approx. 7 awards expected between £100,000–£500,000, and around 20 awards under £100,000.
  • Support for projects that include protection of living heritage and respond to conflict/climate threats.
  • Detailed application guidance, information webinar and slides to help applicants design strong proposals.
  • Possibility of access support (via an agency/consultant) for those needing help to submit applications.
Who Can Apply (Key Requirements):
  • Only legally registered organisations (public or private non-profit). Sole traders are not eligible.
  • Lead organisations may be registered anywhere, but projects must include partners registered in the target country/countries.
  • Partnerships across organisations are encouraged and should be formalised through signed agreements.
  • All projects must include protection of living heritage as a core component.
  • Evidence of local demand and community support for proposed activities must be demonstrated.
  • One lead applicant organisation must take legal and financial responsibility for the grant and sign the Grant Agreement.
  • Private organisations cannot make profit from CPF-funded projects.

Key Dates / Timeline:
  • Applications open: Tuesday 23 June 2026.
  • Expressions of Interest deadline: Monday 20 July 2026, 23:59 BST.
  • Online information session: Wednesday 1 July 2026, 10:00–11:00 BST (recording available).
  • Full application deadline (for selected EOIs): Friday 28 August 2026, 23:59 BST.
  • Projects start: December 2026.
  • Projects end by: 31 January 2029.
