Target Audience:

Legally registered NGOs authorized to operate in the project country, with demonstrated support from relevant governments and Indigenous Peoples or local communities.

Opportunity Summary:

Rainforest Trust offers grants to support the creation and expansion of protected or conserved areas on land or sea, aligned with community and government needs. There are two main types of awards:

  • Feasibility Awards (~$10,000, sometimes over $20,000) to assess potential for protected area creation or expansion.

  • Protected or Conserved Area Creation Awards starting at $250,000, with no set maximum.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Primary objective must be creation or expansion of currently unprotected areas.

  • Areas must protect globally significant populations of endangered species, large tropical/subtropical forests, or critical habitats for climate mitigation.

  • Demonstrated government and community support with Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC).

  • Management systems ensuring long-term conservation outcomes.

  • Resource extraction limits to prevent unsustainable use.

How to Apply:

  1. Confirm eligibility criteria.

  2. Submit a Concept Note anytime via online form; review takes 1-2 months.

  4. If Concept Note accepted, invited to submit detailed application.
